In August 2022, I walked into a children’s home that changed my life.
Over 50 children were living in a backyard, because the couple running the home had reached maximum capacity. Their solution? Shipping containers. Cramped, cold, and crowded - two children sharing a single bed.
They weren’t lacking heart.
They were lacking support.
I was 19. I had no resources, no influence - just a deep desire to help. But like so many young people, I didn’t know where to start.
After countless encounters with other under-resourced organisations, one thing became clear: the problem isn’t apathy. It’s access. Passionate young people want to help. Organisations need support. But there’s a gap between them.
This isn’t an isolated story. It’s a glimpse into South Africa’s painful reality:
44 million youth are out of school. 11 million people live below the poverty line. 2.8 million children are orphaned.
Imagine a world where every young person becomes a force for change.
Where passion meets action.
And making a difference is as simple as opening an app.
This is the world Thallo is building.
Developed the first Thallo platform prototype, connecting youth with NGOs.
Forge initial partnerships with children’s homes, environmental groups, and community organizations.
Shared Thallo’s mission through university presentations, social media campaigns, and mutiple pitch events and competitions.
National Finalists in the Hult Prize Challenge.
2nd Place at the Stellenbosch Hult Prize Round.
1st Place in the Old Mutual Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition at Stellenbosch University.
Taking part in many more upcoming pitch competitions.
We’re just getting started.
Our team is hard at work developing and refining Thallo for its coming launch in 2026. Our next steps include growing our user community, building meaningful partnerships with NGOs and schools, hosting impact-driven events, and stepping onto the stage of startup competitions and community grant programmes.
We’re not just launching an app.
We’re building a movement - and you’re invited to be part of it.
